Talk of the Town
Talk of the Town (Sept 09)
Daventry Town Council recently agreed to move premises from our current offices to a town building which we anticipate will directly benefit our local community. Our town’s museum will have more display space, particularly for our civic artefacts and regalia. Our museum volunteers do a wonderful job of researching, cataloguing and carrying out a myriad of other tasks for which we are very appreciative and we look forward to building upon its continuing success. Currently our museum opens on the first Saturday of the month, which coincides with the Farmers’ Market and each time we receive our “regular” visitors and new people, some from far afield. There is a lively atmosphere which always results in more details of our social history to be recorded for future generations to enjoy.
The recent “Daventry by the Sea” provided by the Town Centre Partnership was a brief but welcome diversion from the recession and the added difficulties that local people may be experiencing. The community spirit of Daventry was evident throughout the day. Even the weather was kind!
Despite the promise of a “barbecue summer” our hanging baskets have provided us with a profusion of colour to brighten up the many dull days. Soon the floral displays will make way for our Christmas Lights, which we anticipate will be enhanced this year. Not forgetting the Switch-On Event. Very well supported last year- we hope so again.
It seems that plans for the Primrose Hill shopping area is now stalled and other projects are on the back burner owing to the current economic climate. However the iCon building is getting underway with the promise of job opportunities and the welcome prospect of its use as a local community resource.
All these initiatives help to sustain our town particularly during the challenges of an economic downturn and if we can support our local traders and our local community then when the “good times” return our town will be in a strong and healthy position to influence and benefit from the future expansion plans for Daventry.
