Daventry Arts Festival Programme 2018

Daventry Town Council is pleased to announce that this year's Arts Festival will take place from 16th-24th June 2018.

The programme for the week of activities and events has now been published and is available for you to download. Below is more information on each event.

Saturday 16th June 2018

Arts & Crafts Fair 11am - 4pm @ Sheaf Street, Daventry
This outdoor Craft Fair will showcase many local crafters selling their handmade wares. The perfect opportunity to buy a Father's Day present, or a gift for a loved one, at the same time as supporting local tradespeople.

Munchkins & Monsters Interactive Theatre Performance 11am and 1pm @ Daventry Leisure Centre
The dynamic theatre company, Munchkins and Monsters, return to Daventry Arts Festival with their interactive and much loved performance of 'The Reluctant Dragon'. Based on the short story by Kenneth Grahame, 'The Reluctant Dragon' tell the tale of a friendly and kind-hearted dragon, who is nothing like the fire breathing beasts you might have heard of before! One day, the dragon meets a young girl and strikes up an unlikely friendship. When word of the dragon reaches the King, he sends his best Knights to rid the land of the creature. Will the Knights succeed or will the girl and the dragon be able to convince the Kingdom that there is more to the dragon than meets the eye?

Live music from local groups 2.30pm - late @ Various locations, Daventry
Daventry Arts Festival is excited to announce its first Mini Fringe Festival. There will be live music from a variety of artists and bands around the Town Centre, ranging from acoustic and folk at Early Doors Pub, to rock and covers at The Saracens Head. There will be live music at Chasers Bar until the early hours as well as an evening of concert music with Daventry Brass Band and Northampton Male Voice Choir at the Holy Cross Church. No need to pre-book places at these events, just turn up and enjoy the wonderful music that Daventry has to offer!

Sunday 17th June 2018

Cycle Tour through Daventry Country Park & Picnic 11am @ Daventry Country Park
If you're struggling to find the perfect gift for Father's Day, why not come along to a Guided Cycle Tour of Daventry, with local Museum Steward, Mike Arnold. Taking you on a historical ride of Daventry's past, you'll learn a lot whilst burning calories! The tour will end with a wonderful picnic in Daventry's Country Park. Don't forget to bring your own cycle and picnic!

If you have a child of pre-school age, this is the perfect place to take them for exploration, fun and frolicking in a soft gym environment. £2 per child.

Rhymetime 10am-10.30am @Daventry Library
For children aged 0-4 years of age, Rhymetime is a free event at Daventry Library. Come and enjoy songs, rhymes and dances whilst using musical toys and scarves. You can even blow bubbles to enjoy a fun and engaging morning.

Bounce & Rhyme 10.45am-11.15am @ Daventry Library
Bounce and rhyme is a free session for under 1's or non walkers, come along and have fun singing, playing instruments and using scarves. A great interactive session for parents/carers and babies. Everyone welcome.

Meet and Greet with U3A 2pm-3pm @ Daventry Museum
The University of the Third Age is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment. It provides educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. The individual U3As are run entirely by volunteers and draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups. The teachers learn and the learners teach in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking though not all subjects are found in all U3As. The U3A approach to learning is learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. To learn more about the national and individual U3As come along and meet the Daventry U3A'ers at Daventry Museum.

Crochet/Knit a Poppy Workshop 5pm-5.45pm @ Daventry Library
As part of this year's Arts Festival, we wanted to pay homage to 2018 being the centenary for the end of WWI. We will be running a campaign to collect as many knitted and crocheted poppies as possible, in order to create a large mural at the Holy Cross Church. If you are interested but are not sure how to make a poppy, come along to this workshop hosted by DTC, where you will learn how to crochet a poppy.

Alternative Art Exhibition 6pm-8.30pm @ The Foundry Café, Daventry
This alternative Art Exhibition will feature never before seen artwork from the local tattoo artists at Nevermore Tattoo Studio. A combination of art and photographs, this one-of-a-kind event is not to be missed. Enjoy the incredible talent that Nevermore has to offer whilst in the artisan space of The Foundry Café.

Poetry Workshop 10.30am-12pm @ Daventry Library
Ever wanted to know the difference between a rhyming couplet and a haiku? Want to finally know what an iambic pentameter is? Then look no further than Daventry Arts Festival's Poetry Workshop. Led by local poet, Maggie Evans, the workshop will help you put pen to paper, making your words come alive on the page. So whether you're a total novice or a Poet Laureate, this workshop has something for everyone.

Play and Learn for under 5's 2pm-2.30pm @ Daventry Library
For children under the age of five, this free session for parents and carers with children provides an opportunity for young children to play with a variety of resources, socialise with others and share experiences to support their learning and development. No need to pre-book, turn up on the day.

Guided Walking Tour of Borough Hill 6.30pm-8pm @ Borough Hill, Daventry
Borough Hill is a minefield of historical information, and for those history buffs who are keen to know more about Daventry's past, then this guided walking tour of Daventry is for you! Guided by local Museum Steward, Mike Arnold, find out about the origin of 'Daventry Calling...', radio broadcasting as well as the part that Borough Hill played in World War Two.

Summer Solstice Gathering 7.30pm-late @ Borough Hill, Daventry
Midsummer, also known as Saint John's Day, is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and traditionally was celebrated to welcome the start of summer. Led by Daventry Pagan Group, the summer solstice gathering will feature ere-enactments of the Holly King meeting the Oak King as well as poetry and a bonfire. All welcome!

Stargazing with Astronomy for Fun 7.30pm - 9pm @ Borough Hill, Daventry
Ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what constellation was which? Then pop along to the stargazing event with local group Astronomy for Fun. Watch the night skies and find stars and constellations using a telescope and even participate in some astrophotography!

Messy Ants Arts & Crafts 10.30am @ Daventry Leisure Centre
Come along and get messy and creative with Messy Ants Arts and Crafts session at Daventry Leisure Centre. Perfect for younger children to encourage their imagination and creativity. £3.50 per child.Children must be supervised at all times.

Play and Learn for under 1's 2pm-3pm @ Daventry Library
A sessions for babies aged under 1 to explore and play, for parents and carers to socialise with others and find out about services on offer in libraries, children's centres and the local community.

Ever wanted to know what bell ringing was like? Well now is your chance to find out as the Daventry Bell Ringers are offering you the chance to try it yourself. There will also be a tour of the Bell Tower the Holy Cross Church if you want a tour as well.

Tips on being an Author Workshop 11am-noon @ Daventry Library
Calling all budding writers! If you're looking to become an author, but are not to sure where to start, then this workshop is for you! Hosted by local author, Mark Robson, there will be advice from where to start your novel or story, to how to publish your written word. Mark will be reading a short excerpt from one of his latest publications and there will also be a chance for a Q&A session at the end.

Mend & Make-Do Workshop with DTC 1pm - 2pm @ Daventry Library
Have lots of old clothes/t-shirts at home that you don't know what to do with? Want to learn how to convert them into beautiful cushion covers without breaking the bank? Then this workshop is for you! Hosted by the team at DTC, come along and learn how to quickly, and effectively, turn an old t-shirt into a cushion cover. All items will be supplied apart from a t-shirt (make sure you get the owners permission before taking it!) and a cushion, so please bring those with you on the day.

Guided Historical Walk of Daventry 4pm @ Daventry Town Centre
Learn all about Daventry's past with Museum Steward, and local history enthusiast, Mike Arnold. Take a trip down memory lane as you meander around Daventry Town's Streets and learn fascinating facts about Daventry's BBC broadcasting past, as well as its part in WWII.

'An Evening of Song' 7pm @ Holy Cross Church
If you're looking for something a bit different on a Saturday evening, then look no further than 'An Evening of Song' at the Holy Cross Church. Featuring The Rock Choir and the Cantares Singers, this is an evening that is well worth the trip into Daventry Town Centre.
The Rock Choir is so much more than a choir - it is a multi layered singing experience. With over 45 members, and with a current and upbeat repertoire, their performance is one not to be missed.
The Cantare Singers are a 45 strong SATB choir based in Northamptonshire. They perform a variety of music from songs from musicals to modern pop hits.

Sunday 24th June 2018

International SUNday Funday 12pm - 2pm @ Daventry Museum
Celebrate International SUNday by being able to look at the sun through large telescopes. Create your own badges, draw pictures and have FUN at Daventry Museum with local Astronomy Group 'Astronomy for Fun'. No need to pre-book, simply drop in and have fun!

Family Film Day presents...'The Greatest Showman' 3pm @ Daventry Community Centre
To celebrate the end of Daventry Arts Festival, we will be hosting a one-off screening of 'The Greatest Showman' at Daventry Community Centre.
The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. Featuring an all star cast (Hugh Jackman, Zac Effron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya) this is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Daventry Museum
A wonderful exhibition at Daventry Museum showcasing different arts, crafts and collectables from local people in Daventry. The collection includes pocket watches, Daventry's original May Day Crown, vinyl and much more!

Photography Exhibition 16th June 2018 - 24th June 2018
Daventry Library
Daventry Photographic Society will be showcasing the collection of photographs sent in as part of their photographic competition (see below poster for more information if you are interested in entering). All winning photographs entered will be displayed for public viewing at Daventry Library for the above dates. All welcome to view.

Art Exhibition from The Grid Studios 16th June 2018 - 24th June 2018
Daventry Library
The Grid Studios is a Rugby based studio group which has been running since 2002. Home to 20+ artists, painters, sculptors, ceramicists, printmakers, furniture restorers and mixed media artists, their work will be showcased as part of Daventry Arts Festival in Daventry Library from 16th - 24th June 2018.
