Raising a Flag for the Commonwealth

Raising a Flag for the Commonwealth

On Monday 12th March 2018, Daventry Town Mayor, Lynne Taylor, along with other members of the community, attended at the Twinning Garden, at the top of London Road, to raise the Commonwealth Flag.

Nationally, and internationally, thousands of Commonwealth Flags were being raised at 10am in a shared celebration of this amazing family of nations that encompasses the globe.

The Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth initiative, now in its fourth year, is again catching the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life, inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth. As a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, it enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth young and old citizens around the world.

Prior to the raising of the flag, readings were said by Deputy Town Mayor, Lynn Jones, and Angela Squires, followed by a blessing by Canon Michael Webber, from the Holy Cross Church.

The Mayor said of the event, "At a time where things feel so uncertain, taking part in a wonderful event such as this, reminds us that we stand united with our global family, as well as our local community.

We should feel encouraged to continue shining as individuals, upholding the values that are internationally shared amongst the commonwealth, in particular inclusivity and respect for diversity.

With over 27,000 residents in Daventry, each one is unique and special in their own way and by building on the commonwealth attributes, we can continue to celebrate Daventry's uniqueness as well as supporting our town in being an enjoyable place to live, work and visit. "

Daventry Town Council will be planning to host the ceremony again in 2019 and will release dates nearer the time.
