DTC: Flying the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day

DTC: Flying the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day

Daventry Town Council will be flying the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day to remember the sacrifices and courage of those who have served during World Wars One and Two. This will take place at 10.30am on Monday 3rd September 2018 at the Twinning Area in Daventry Town Centre. All are welcome to attend.

Daventry Town Council is one of more than 600 councils across the UK that will be participating in Merchant Navy Day to help raise awareness of our nation's ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers. The flag will be flown throughout the week.

The 3rd of September is the official Merchant Navy Day as this day saw the first major British maritime casualty; the merchant vessel SS Athenia was torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared in 1939. 128 passengers and crew were lost, and this day is commemorated as Merchant Navy Day to honour the brave men and women who served during both World Wars.

The Mayor of Daventry, Cllr Lynn Jones, will be supporting Seafarer's UK 'Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day' campaign by attending the flag raising ceremony, along with other Town Council members and community leaders.
