DTC raises the Commonwealth Flag in Celebration
On Monday 11th March 2019, Cllr Lynn Jones, Mayor of Daventry and Chair of Council, was joined at the Twinning Area in Daventry by fellow Town Councillors, District Councillors, Cadets, and members of the public, in order to celebrate Commonwealth Day by raising the Commonwealth Flag.
Celebrated globally in March every year, both Her Majesty The Queen and the Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, delivered messages highlighting the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter, which unite 2.4 billion people in 53 countries.
The theme for 2019 is 'A Connected Commonwealth', which offers opportunities for the people, governments and institutions of the richly diverse family of nations to connect and work together at many levels through far-reaching and deep-rooted networks of friendships and goodwill.
The flag-raising event included an opening speech from the Mayor, a reading of HM The Queen's message (by Ryan and Harriett from DSLV Sixth Form) and a blessing from Reverend Dawn Stokes from the Holy Cross Church.
Cllr Lynn Jones said, "As this year marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Commonwealth, it is important for us to commemorate the occasion. At a local level, interpreting the theme of 'A Connected Commonwealth', voluntary effort by people working in either groups or as individuals, is what often shapes our communities, and by association, the Commonwealth. By working towards the common good, we can ensure that our community continues to grow."
