Daventry Town Council: Community Litter Picks Spring Clean Triumph!
Daventry Town Council was delighted to relaunch its Community Litter Picks once again after they were suspended following Government Covid restrictions.
To coincide with the Keep Britain Tidy #GreatBritishSpringClean initiative held between 28 May – 13 June 2021, we organised our own series of three consecutive Saturday Community Litter Pick Walks that we welcomed residents to join in with too.
Our Picks were held in areas of town previously identified by residents as litter hotspots which they were keen to tackle. Those area were: Middlemore, Stefen Hill and New Street Park and picks were held in those communities on Saturday 29 May, Saturday 5 June and Saturday 12th June respectively.
We were treated to glorious weather on each of our picks which helped encourage residents both young and old to come along and get involved, which in turn created a real sense of community spirit that was infectious. Each pick was deemed a success and we had a combination of familiar faces and new participants join us each week.
Daventry Town Council Chief Officer Deborah Jewell commented:
"Daventry Town Council is passionate about making a difference to the environment in all areas of Daventry town. In Autumn 2020, DTC launched its #Litterheroes Campaign investing over £3k to purchase over 100 litter-picking kits, which were given out to local volunteers to encourage residents to target areas that can safely be cleared of litter to clean-up and generate a pride in the environment and community they live in."
The picks were led by our Community Ranger Charlotte Jones who was delighted by the attendance from residents who were happy to pledge their time to support the campaign alongside many Ward Councillors. Mayor of Daventry and Chair of Daventry Town Council Cllr Karen Tweedale was in attendance of our final Pick walk of the series and remarked:
It was a delight to be able to participate in the Community Litter Pick Walk and to help look after the beautiful green space in the centre of our lovely town which is enjoyed by all. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who came along to help in this successful event."
We hope to host future Litter Pick events later in the year, which we will update residents via our website and social platforms, but in the meantime are enthused by those communities who have since started their own regular picks to ensure the town stays as litter free as possible.
